I think platform PMs embody the platonic idea of what a product manager is. The amount I learned and grew during my time ICing and leading a platform team was immense. I would also argue platform PMs are the best suited to become future founders as you need to have a holistic view of the entire product to succeed in this role. They also understand barriers to scale better than any other type of PM and are experts at making tradeoffs that allow you to scale AND continue to delivery value.
This is great! So true that the platform role makes you a better PM: by increasing the complexities and distance to end user you actually have to up your game in prioritisation/stakeholder management/strategic-alignment/communication skills to hunt out the maximum value creation
